They told me it was a symbol of our God and our freedom from “sin.” They explained how it was significant because it portrayed our savior, Jesus Christ and our renewed life. Because of this, the first time I was ever exposed to the cross was at church, where they taught me the significant meaning of the cross to our faith.
In addition, my sister and I went to church every Friday night for our youth group service. I attended my church, Calvary Presbyterian Church, with my parents every Sunday since I was a child. Growing up, I was born and raised in a very religious, Christian family. My interpretation of the cross is highly influenced by my experience and history with my church, my family, my friends, and my high school. A cross to me symbolizes a piece of my life, my morals, and freedom from “sins.” I tend to think of Jesus Christ as well as the Red Cross so whenever I see the cross, it symbolizes health and cleanliness. When I see a cross, I associate positive meanings with it.
Depending on one’s background, people can interpret the meaning of the cross in many different ways. The contemporary meanings behind the cross can range from an optimistic view relating to religious freedom or nationalistic views, to a pessimistic view that represents oppression towards certain groups, such as homosexuals. With that being said, when people look at a cross and think of the typical ideas it symbolizes, they interpret the cross in many different ways. Design Boom magazine shares how today the cross is commonly used for representing Christ/Christianity, the Red Cross, and several countries such as Great Britain and Switzerland (who use the symbol of the cross on their flags). The cross is a commonly used cultural artifact that has been around even since the ancient Greeks and even though the meanings behind the cross may have changed, it is still used to symbolize certain ideas in our culture today. Definition of Cross according to : “a structure consisting essentially of an upright and a transverse piece, used to execute persons in ancient times.”Įveryone has at least seen a cross once in their life.
